Sing Tao Daily: California launches new online gun safety tool to help people apply for “gun violence protection orders”.

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced yesterday the launch of a new online gun safety tool to help people apply for Gun Violence Protection Orders (GVPOs) more clearly and quickly, and to connect with local community support resources, further strengthening California’s leading position in national public safety policy.

The tool, named “Local Resource Connector,” is an interactive online platform that officially launched on February 4th and is located on the official website of the “Reduce the Risk” advocacy program. Users can simply enter their postal code or city/county to instantly access information about the High Court in their area, court self-service websites, and community organizations offering free or low-cost assistance, including contact information, service locations, and supported languages.

The state government pointed out that the process of applying for a gun violence protection order has often been considered complicated and stressful. The new platform is designed to address the issues of fragmented information and unclear procedures, providing a clear starting point for individuals, their families, or supporters, and ensuring that they can access the right resources immediately in a crisis. This online tool is an extension of the state’s “Reduce the Risk” statewide gun violence prevention program. Led by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and in collaboration with community organizations, behavioral health experts, and law enforcement, the program uses multilingual resources, training, and practical tools to improve public understanding and ability to use prevention options.

Officials also noted that this announcement comes as California has once again been ranked as the state with the most stringent and effective gun laws in the nation.

The state government emphasizes that gun violence protection orders are a key tool in California’s overall prevention strategy. Under the current system, California has nine types of protection orders that temporarily require the removal of firearms and ammunition when a court determines that someone may pose a danger to themselves or others. These measures have successfully prevented numerous potential tragedies. The public can visit ReducetheRisk.ca.gov for more information; in case of immediate danger, call 911 for assistance.
